NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana - CBS News has confirmed a containment cap over the gushing oil well in the Gulf of Mexico has been removed.

BP Officials say the temporary cap was removed at 1:37pm ET today (7/10).

Oil is now flowing into the Gulf without being collected from the well head.

A new, tighter cap with a better seal will be placed on the well.

The new cap is expected to funnel more oil to collection ships on the surface of the ocean.

If all goes well, the oil could be contained sometime Monday.

A permanent solution is still weeks off.

That involves an attempt to plug the well far below the gushing well head.
